The core cultural theme, *A Glimpse of Chinese Civilization: The Millennium Ancient Capital*, invites you on a 7-day immersive journey across three distinct cities, each with its own unique character: Beijing, the solemn seat of imperial power and ritual; Chengde, the Qing emperors’ summer retreat beyond the Great Wall; and Tianjin, the vibrant multicultural port city at the end of nine rivers, with a unique blend of Chinese and Western heritage.
The first tier features four iconic, world-famous landmarks: the Forbidden City central axis, the Badaling Great Wall, Chengde Mountain Resort, and the Western-style mansions of Tianjin’s Five Great Avenues. The second tier showcases off-the-beaten-path local scenes tucked into everyday life: morning street food markets in Beijing hutongs, prayer wheel spinning at Chengde’s Outer Eight Temples, Marco Polo Square in Tianjin’s Italian Style Quarter, and crosstalk tea houses brimming with local everyday bustle. The third tier offers hands-on intangible cultural heritage experiences, including cloisonné enamel filigree crafting, Peking Opera vocal sessions, crosstalk skits, and Tianjin-style crosstalk – a perfect blend of the distinct local flavors of Beijing and Tianjin. Layering these three tiers lets you experience three distinct ways of life across the three cities over your 7-day trip.
For transportation, a single premium van will accompany your group for the entire 7 days, so you will never need to carry your luggage between stops. The longest single drive is just 2.5 hours (for the Beijing-Chengde and Chengde-Tianjin legs respectively), with no high-speed rail transfers or rushed luggage hauls. We have intentionally designed a relaxed pace: 3 slow, unhurried days exploring Beijing instead of a rushed tour, 1 full day dedicated exclusively to Chengde Mountain Resort, and 2 full days of in-depth exploration in Tianjin instead of a rushed day trip.
For meals, only dinner is included on your arrival day (a Beijing copper pot hot pot welcome dinner), only breakfast is included on your departure day, and all breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included for the days in between. [Visa Exemption Notice] This tour is eligible for the 240-hour transit visa exemption policy for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei visa-free zone. Travelers must hold valid international travel documents, a third-country visa, and a connecting flight ticket. Visa-free stay is capped at 10 days, with entry and exit only permitted via Beijing ports, and travelers may move within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. [Transportation Information] A single 5-7 seat business van will accompany the group for the full 7 days; luggage will ride in the van at all times with no need for transfer. The drive from Beijing to Chengde takes approximately 2.5 hours, as does the drive from Chengde to Tianjin; the drive from Tianjin back to Beijing is around 1.5 hours. Fewer attractions will be scheduled on cross-city travel days to accommodate travel time. [Weather & Packing Tips] The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has four distinct seasons. Bring a face mask for spring, when sandstorms are common; pack sun hats and sunglasses for summer; bring a thin jacket for autumn, when temperatures vary sharply between day and night; and pack down jackets, warm shoes, and hats for winter, when temperatures drop below freezing. The Chengde Mountain Resort, named for its role as a summer retreat, sits at a higher elevation and is 3-5°C cooler than Beijing in summer, and was the favored summer destination for Qing Dynasty emperors. [Cultural Etiquette] The Forbidden City requires advance real-name reservation; do not touch cultural relics when entering palace halls. The Eight Outer Temples at the Chengde Mountain Resort are Tibetan Buddhist sites; please turn prayer wheels clockwise. Most of the Western-style mansions in Tianjin's Italian Style District are private residences; do not enter without permission to take photos. Please refrain from loud talking in crosstalk teahouses to avoid disturbing performers. [Itinerary Adjustments] The Forbidden City is closed on Mondays (except for public holidays); if a tour day falls on a Monday, the order of activities in the Beijing segment will be adjusted. If the Great Wall is closed due to extreme weather, the activity will be replaced with a visit to the Ming Tombs or the Temple of Heaven. If the Chengde Mountain Resort's tour boats are suspended during the Chengde segment, the activity will be replaced with a visit to the Puning Temple (one of the Eight Outer Temples).
